Mixed News for Online Gambling in Hawaii and Maine
The latest Hawaiian online gambling bill has failed, while online lottery ticket discussions continue in Maine.
A bill initiated in Hawaii in January which proposed to legalize online gambling has failed. Reportedly, the state Legislature did not have time to discuss the bill.
Hawaii is the only American state bar Utah where all types of gambling are illegal. It has made more than 150 attempts have been made to legalize gambling.
Meanwhile, a bill in Maine to begin selling online lottery tickets in 2013 was discussed at a Veteran and Legal Affairs Committee meeting on March 19.
Maine Bureau of Lottery Operations Director Jerry Reid argued that capturing the attention of the Internet literate 18-30 age group would boost flagging sales.
However, Cheryl Timberlake, a Penn National Gaming lobbyist, said online sales would hit standard retailers and land casinos hard.
Ms Timberlake proposed that retailers and land casinos receive online ticket sales in compensation for the loss of business.
Senator Debra Plowman, who introduced the bill, said that potential avenues will be explored with caution.
